SOVEREIGNTY HYMNS

A woman with long curly black hair singing into a microphone with her eyes closed. Behind her, there is a yellow board with handwritten notes and a colorful abstract painting. The Jolla Playhouse logo is in the upper left corner, and large text reads "Sovereignty Hymns" with smaller text "Hymn 3: God My Redeemer."

The first iteration of Sovereignty Hymns by The Bengsons was commissioned and released by La Jolla Playhouse in 2021, in the wake of the overturning of Roe v. Wade. It was a virtual series made up of original songs inspired by interviews with people whose lives have been impacted by abortion.

A new, live iteration is now in development with Director Will Davis as a part of PAC NYC's The Democracy Cycle. It will be a cantata and communal storytelling experience celebrating and honoring body sovereignty.

"Our provocation is that reproductive freedom is about all of us. We believe that body sovereignty is a core tenet of democracy, and something that we each hold. We do not accept that it can be given, taken away, or negotiated. And yet throughout the course of American history our rights to our own bodies have been the subject of debate. Sovereignty Hymns is an invitation to feel the sanctity of choice, and a joyful and insistent prayer that our choices be honored by those in power and those we love." - The Bengsons
